A notebook with sound — not a replacement for the musician.
The random buttons use simple musical rules to create a starting point; they are not an AI composition model. 303box exists to make tiny-step editing easier, let you hear the sketch, and help you move that idea onto hardware. The musical decisions and the performance remain yours.

Learn sequencing by changing one musical decision.
303box is a free online step sequencer and Web MIDI controller for music makers, beginners and developers exploring musical interfaces. Build a 16-step bass phrase, audition it in your browser and compare how notes, rests, accent and slide change the result. No hardware is needed for these listening exercises.
1. Hear what a rest does
Keep a copy of any pattern you want to save. Start a new phrase with the same note on steps 1, 5, 9 and 13 and rests elsewhere. Keep tempo and sound controls fixed. Listen, then turn step 9 into a rest.
Listen for: the longer gap before step 13. The pitch stays the same, but the rhythm changes. Put step 9 back and compare.
2. Move the emphasis
Restore those four notes. Switch accent on for step 5, listen, then move that accent to step 13. Keep the notes, tempo and filter controls unchanged.
Listen for: where the phrase feels stressed. Accent can affect brightness as well as loudness; its strength depends on the sound settings.
3. Give slide a destination
Place C on step 1 and G on step 2, with both steps sounding. Enable slide on step 1, listen, then disable it. Leave the other settings alone.
Listen for: the transition between pitches. Compare a connected glide with two separate attacks. A rest after the source note changes the comparison.

Choose the right playback path
- Browser audition
- Hear the site's synthesizer through your computer or phone. Start playback yourself to activate audio. This is a learning and sketching sound; it does not reproduce every setting of your hardware.
- Live Web MIDI
- Send performance messages to a compatible instrument. The selected OUTPUT must match the connected device's MIDI input route, and BASS CH must match its receive channel. The instrument makes the sound, so its patch and controls affect what you hear. A MIDI connection carries control messages, not the browser's audio.
- Writing device memory
- Saving a pattern inside an instrument is a separate, device-specific operation. Successful live playback does not prove that memory writing is supported. Check the hardware guide for the supported method and its limitations before attempting a transfer.
Browser playback needs JavaScript and Web Audio. Hardware control additionally needs a browser and operating system that support Web MIDI, permission and a compatible MIDI connection. Connection and hardware guide · About the project and its methods.
